The Healthiest White Rice (Frugal and Yummy Recipes Too!)

I eat a lot of rice due to my food intolerances. Rice is a safe starch for me and a lot of others who are following a low fodmap, low allergen, or modified paleo diet. Since I eat so much rice, I want to eat the healthiest rice that I can find.
I took some time to research different types of rice. After much thought and research, I chose white jasmine rice as my preferred rice. I know that sounds surprising, since brown rice is often touted as being the healthier option. But white jasmine rice is very easy to digest for those with IBS or other digestion issues.
Health Benefits of Jasmine Rice
White Jasmine Rice is Good for Digestion
White jasmine rice is low in almost everything-which is a good thing if you have food intolerances to fodmaps, histamines, oxalates, or glutamates. This makes it very easy to digest for most people.
White rice doesn’t have the phytic acid that brown rice does. Phytic acid is found in the brown or outer hull of the rice. Phytic acid is very hard to digest and it can even cause tooth decay-partly because it inhibits the body from absorbing the minerals that keep bones and teeth strong. (Wellness Mama does a good job of explaining phytic acid and its role in cavities. You can read more about that in her article on reversing tooth decay.)
For me personally, I have found white jasmine rice to be a safe source of carbs-I need the carbs to help keep my adrenals glands strong, and jasmine rice is a carb that doesn’t aggravate my digestion.
White Jasmine Rice is low in Toxins
White jasmine rice is also very low in toxins. Sadly, many types of rice have high levels of arsenic! Arsenic is obviously a poison I don’t want to ingest, especially since detox is a big part of why I am healthy now. White Jasmine Rice from Thailand is much lower in arsenic than many other types of rice. (Basmati is also a good choice for avoiding arsenic, but it is usually a lot more expensive.)
Arsenic is not always completely avoidable. Other foods can contain arsenic as well. It is possible to greatly minimize the amount by choosing clean sources of food.
Where to Buy Jasmine Rice (Lowest Prices)
I have bought jasmine rice from quite a few places. They have jasmine rice from Thailand available in most grocery stores. I like the Mahatma brand at Food Lion, and I do buy it if I am there and I need it.
However, I have found comparable jasmine rice at cheaper prices at Aldi and Walmart. 5 pounds of Mahatma rice is $7.19 at Food Lion.
5 pounds is 75 1/2 cup servings of cooked rice. Even at Food Lion’s price that is less than 10 cent per 1/2 cup serving. Using rice as a side dish will make meals very cheap!
Aldi’s has 5 pounds of jasmine rice from Thailand for $4.79. That comes out to 6 cent per 1/2 cup serving!
If you don’t mind buying 20 pounds of rice at the time, Walmart has an excellent price on jasmine rice-20 pounds is only $13.98 at my Walmart. That comes out to around 4 1/2 cents per serving!
