Trying to lose weight can be tough. It is hard to know what to focus on. There seem to be so many opinions on what actually matters when you are trying to lose weight.
Here is one thing you can count on-healthy food matters. There are other factors that are important-but food is number one.
Food has the power to move the needle in weight loss faster than exercise. Exercise is important, but if you want to have energy to exercise, you need some healthy food in your body.
Food also has the ability to affect your hormones-either in a really negative way or a really positive way. And imbalanced hormones can keep you from losing weight. Balanced hormones have the power to change how you feel, how you look, and how much you weigh.
I used to struggle with a myriad of health issues. I felt bad, and I didn’t have much energy. I gained weight, I struggled with headaches, missing periods, heart palpitations, bloating, breathlessness and more. I worked on my health for a long time.
When I began to work on detoxing from heavy metals, I began losing weight. Even though it wasn’t only food that helped me to lose weight (heavy metal detox helped also), food was still a fundamental part of my weight loss.
Food laid the foundation for me to be able to balance my hormones, heal my digestion, and overcome infections and toxicity. Food was a big part of my heavy metal detox plan.
I was in my early 30’s when I began to feel my worst. I gained weight and wasn’t able to lose it. Now I am over 40. I have been eating real food for around 7 or 8 years.
For that long, I have eaten a higher fat diet and I enjoy a good amount of carbs. Yet, I lost the extra weight I had years ago and I still weigh less than I did in my early 30’s. Nourishing clean foods and detox was the key for my weight loss.
Here are some things I have learned about weight loss:
Focus on Healthy Foods
When you are trying to lose weight it is easier to focus on what to eat rather than what not to eat. All clean eating foods can help you lose weight especially if you are transitioning from eating processed food or restaurant food.
But sometimes our body needs a little help detoxing and balancing blood sugar. That is when you want the clean eating foods that are weight loss superheroes.
I wrote all about these clean eating foods for weight loss in a previous article, but I also wanted to give you a printable that you can take to the grocery store. You could also hang it on your refrigerator to remind you of foods that your body would love to have. 🙂
I want to mention that you can eat other foods that are not on this list. This clean eating grocery list is just to inspire you to eat more of the healthy foods that can help with weight loss.

Carbohydrates and Weight Loss
If you are really wanting to supercharge your weight loss, cut out refined sugar and use healthy sweeteners when you want something sweet. This step alone helps many people lose weight.
Of course, some people go a step farther and just cut out carbs entirely-like the keto diet, atkins diet, etc. I think some people may need this, but many people will see great results from simply eating more clean eating foods that accelerate weight loss (like the ones on the printable below).
If you are curious about balancing out carbs, you may want to read “What is a Healthy Diet?” That post explains what works for a lot of people as far as carbs and weight loss. It is how I eat to feel my best.
My sister has been able to lose weight and keep it off for a long time and I asked her about her carb intake. She said that she has worked on listening to her body for a long time and knows how many carbs make her feel good. She generally eats about half of the carbs that I do, and that works for her.
She did keto for a while (which is basically no carbs) and she never felt her absolute best. So, she added in a little carbs and felt much better. For example, she now eats one piece of bread with her lunch. I eat at least twice as many carbs as her and I feel better with the carbs. There is definitely some trial and error where carbs are concerned.
Keep it Simple
The printable grocery list that I made for you is super simple. It is simply some of the best foods around for accelerating weight loss. It is not meant to be a comprehensive list of everything you are going to eat. It is just a helpful list for when you are grocery shopping or thinking of what you should be eating.
Every time you choose one of the foods on this list, you are giving your body the tools to work at its very best. If you want to know more about why these foods are so powerful, read my post “Clean Eating Foods for Weight Loss“.

My sister also agrees with keeping things simple. She says that when she eats too many complicated dishes like casseroles she finds it hard to keep up with what she is eating. She stays on track better by eating very simple food like roasted broccoli, sauteed chicken, and Ezekial bread toast.
Plus, eating simply helps her to save time in the kitchen. You can read more about my sister and her weight loss journey on her Team Beachbody page here.
Weight loss and food are definitely connected. Focus on healthy foods and you will find that you will lose weight naturally.
