When I taught my kids to read, I started by teaching them the alphabet. It took some practice to help them remember each letter. One of the things we did was to talk about what the letter looked like. We also talked about the letter’s sound. Then we practiced writing the letter.

Letter e tracing worksheets
Even though these worksheets are perfect for kindergarten, they can also work well for some older students that are learning to read. Some preschoolers would enjoy them also. (I am a big proponent of teaching when you see signs of interest in your child.)
