If you are teaching reading, you probably know that you need to start by introducing the individual letter sounds. The letter a is a good place to start.
Since it is important to teach the short a sound first, This printable short story on the letter a has a few sentences with short a words in it. Then there are a few lines for you to read to practice the short a sound with your student. When you see /a/, then you say the short a sound.
There are also a few instructions (like “Point at the A in Adam”). These instructions are in gray because you don’t read those out loud. (Everything that is written in black is to be read aloud.)
As you are asking questions, it is a good idea to point to the letter a in the words. This helps your student to understand that the printed letter represents a sound.
After you do this alphabet story with your student, you can reinforce the letter a sound with some worksheets. I have some free printable letter a worksheets here.
This is an alphabet story for kindergarten. Although it can work for preschool or older kids as well. I am a big believer in teaching children when they are ready. You can read more about that in my article “How to Teach Reading Without a Curriculum – What You Need to Know“.
